The first article focusing on an unsolicited look at cool and interesting Kickstarter campaigns. Basically, as a huge fan of Kickstarter, I will peruse its selection of board games, card games or gaming accessories and make report of any of note. I will focus on games that are either high in quality, exceptional in its design, on its way to being funded successfully or a combination of these attributes. I reiterate that this report is unsolicited, but I would ask that you click the links if interested, if for no other reason than to support those attempting to further our hobby.
The Great War
The Great War is a World War I miniatures game that looks promising for fans of games like Battle Cry and Memoir ’44. From the Kickstarter campaign;
“The Commands & Colors WWI THE GREAT WAR game rules allow players to portray important engagements throughout WWI history. The battles, included in the scenario booklet, focus on the historical deployment of forces and important terrain features of trench fighting in scale with the game system. The scale of the game is flexible and varies from battle to battle. For some scenarios, a few infantry units may represent an entire wing of a larger battle, while in other scenarios a unit may represent just a few brave soldiers going over the top.
The Command card system drives movement, creates a “fog of war”, and presents players with many interesting opportunities, while the battle dice resolve combat quickly and efficiently. The Combat cards add an element of suspense and will challenge players to coordinate their use in a timely manner. Overall, the battlefield tactics players will need to execute to gain victory conform remarkably well to the strengths and limitations of the various types of WWI units, their weapons, battlefield terrain, and written history.”
Of the wars of the 20th Century World War II tends to gain the majority of the attention of from board game designers, so it is refreshing to see the first world war get recognized. The miniatures look fantastic and the components look on par with other tabletop miniature games. I will definitely follow The Great War’s campaign with interest!

As a big fan of the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game, I was excited to see a variation on the acrylic replacements templates we’ve grown accustomed to seeing for the game. This Kickstarter campaign includes custom templates and colored sets of tokens to replace the cardboard tokens included in the core set and expansions. They are definitely worth a look!
